Churchill est une petite communauté de 750 habitants sur les rives de la Baie d'Hudson au nord du Manitoba. Au début du mois de novembre, un grand nombre d’ours polaires s'y rassemblent car ils savent que la banquise s’y forme plus tôt qu’ailleurs. Dès qu’elle supporte leur poids, ils s’y dispersent pour chasser le phoque jusqu’à la fin de l’hiver. Malgré de nombreuses interactions avec les hommes durant ces quelques semaines de cohabitation, les accidents restent très rares, bien que les ours (les plus grands prédateurs terrestres, 700kg pour les mâles, 500kg pour les femelles) soient omniprésents.
Churchill is a small community with a population of 750, on the shore of the Hudson Bay (Northern Manitoba). Early November, a large number of polar bear gather around the village. They know that here, the bay freezes sooner than anywhere else. As soon as the ice is thick enough to support their weight , they move on their annual seal hunting season through the end of winter. Despite numerous interactions with men during these few weeks, accidents with the largest land predator (1600 lbs for males, 1100 lbs for females) remain very seldom.
